You dump the contents of a matchbook into the spectators hand and ask them to place as few or as many matches back into the box as they want. You of course have your back turned so you cannot see how many matches they get rid of and close in the matchbox. When you turn around you can look into their eyes and tell them how many matches remain in their closed fist.
